An effort to rename the Southeast Texas Regional Airport received a big lift Monday.
Jefferson County Commissioners Court approved a resolution to rename the airport after Jack Brooks. Brooks represented this area in Congress for more than 40 years. He and his wife live in Beaumont.
Commissioners approved the resolution after hearing from attorney Hubert Oxford III. Oxford spoke before commissioners two weeks ago and again Monday, urging support for the renaming.
He says Brooks helped this region in more ways than can be counted, including playing an instrumental role in the creation of Lamar University, a flood control levee in Jefferson County, DD6, Lake Sam Rayburn and civil rights legislation.
Oxford says in the two weeks since he first spoke about the proposal at Commissioners Court, he’s received a number of phone calls from people telling him how Jack Brooks changed their lives.
The FAA must also approve the name change.
